    POSITION DESCRIPTION

     

    POSITION TITLE: Network Technician                         DEPARTMENT: POLICE         

     

    POSITION CODE: 31-950                                                         FLSA STATUS: Exempt

     

    POSITION REPORTS TO: POLICE ADMIN ASST CAPTAIN

     

    POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None.                                

     

    BLS COMPARABLE: 15-1071, Network & Computer Systems Administrators

    Leadership: Provides co-worker leadership to others through motivation, team building,

    and providing feedback.    

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    • Subject to post offer, pre-employment drug screen.
    • As a position directly affecting the safety of others, the employee will be required to comply with all provisions of City of Enid’s substance abuse policy, including random drug and alcohol testing.

    POSITION PURPOSE: To provide quality user support services to the Enid Police Department through installation and maintenance of the network, computer hardware, software, and peripheral equipment.  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

    • Diagnose hardware and software problems, and replace defective components.
    • Determine specific network hardware or software requirements, such as platforms, interfaces, bandwidth or routine schemas.
    • Perform data backups and develop disaster recovery plans.
    • Maintain, update, and administer computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, network access, file security, printers, and all other peripherals connected to network.
    • Perform routine network startup and shutdown procedures, and maintain control records.
    • Pull, terminate, and troubleshoot Ethernet cabling between all networked devices; switches, routers, end user computers, printers, etc.
    • Design, configure, and test computer hardware, networking software and operating system software.
    • Provide support to network users for ITI RMS and Evidentiary Software and other City of Enid applications. Confer and troubleshoot with users to solve existing system problems.
    • Comply with, and report violations of, City of Enid computer and internet use policies.
    • Answer and troubleshoot employees’ inquiries regarding computer operation.·             Install, upgrade, and perform repairs to hardware, software, and peripheral equipment. Review technical manuals, confer with users, and conduct computer diagnostics to investigate and resolve problems and to provide technical assistance and support.                ·             Confer with staff, users, and management to establish requirements for new systems or

    • Technology for the Enid Police Department is efficient and serves needs of the department.
    • Computer and telecommunications systems run effectively 99.9% of the time.       Problems and computing needs are addressed in a timely manner.
    • Effective working relations exist with the Information Technology department and city personnel. Departmental technology systems run smoothly and efficiently, and personnel computer related issues are resolved in a timely manner.
    • New employees are well trained and assisted. Management is appropriately informed.
    • Employee understands and adheres to applicable safety policies.
    • The City’s professional reputation is maintained.

    QUALIFICATIONS

     

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:                  Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university and two years related experience and/or training and related coursework; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    CERTIFICATES/LICENSES:                  Continuing education/certification in related field preferred (i.e. MCSE, MCP, MCSA, or CCDBA).

     

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:                    Computers and Electronics — Knowledge of electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming. Advanced personal computer skills including electronic mail, record-keeping, routine database activity to include development of spreadsheets, formulas, record tracking applications, word processing, graphics, research, etc.

     

                                                                Telecommunications — Knowledge of transmission, broadcasting, switching, control, and operation of IP telecommunications systems.

     

    SKILLS/ABILITIES:                              Handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

                                                               Accurate and attentive to detail.

    Excellent communications and public relations abilities.

    Strong typing and computer application skills.

    Ability to assist and support others.

    Able to operate telephone, PC, copier, and other basic business machines.

    PHYSICAL & MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

     

    FINGER DEXTERITY:                      Manual dexterity sufficient to work with the fingers.

    VISUAL ABILITIES:                          Normal vision, with or without corrective lenses.

     

    PHYSICAL STRENGTH:                   Exerts up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally. (Almost all office jobs.) Sedentary physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of an administrative nature.

     

    LANGUAGE/COMPREHENSION:     Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.  

     

    REASONING ABILITY:                     Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form.

     

    MATHEMATICS ABILITY:                 Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    WORK SCHEDULE/HOURS:      Regular –8 hour shift, typically 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.

                                                    After hours as required.

     

    Other–Variable lunch period and breaks in coordination with other office personnel.

    WORK CONDITIONS:                Well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation.

     

    Noise level:                             Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).

    ADVANCEMENT CRITERIA:

    INTERMEDIATE
    ADVANCED

    6-8 years related experience.

    9+ years related experience.

    Additional coursework towards Master’s Degree.

    Master’s Degree in related field.

    Completion of 1 or more exams in MCSA, MCSE,

    MCDBA, or MCP.

    Two or more current MCSA, MCSE, or MCDBA certifications.

    3+ years experience in ITI RMS and evidence software.

    Advanced knowledge of ITI RMS and evidence software.

    Valid CPR certification.

    Demonstration of supervisory skills.
